4 reasons you should start circuit training

The world of fitness and training can be a bit of a minefield.

There’s that weird machine in the gym you avoid at all costs, simply to skip an embarrassing case of ‘how the hell do I use this?’ And that over-hyped workout class you reluctantly decide to sign up for, only to find it’s, well, crap.  So, why not take your workouts into your own hands and give circuit training a go!

If you’re new to circuit training, let us introduce you: it’s basically a number of different exercises performed one after the other. Think 10 jump squats, 10 burpees and 10 lunges, have a rest and do it all again! It really can be that simple.

Or if you’re looking for more of a challenge, up the number of exercises and reduce your rest time. If you’re looking for a pump, pick strength-based exercises or if you’re keen to increase your fitness or torch fat, keep your exercises cardio based.

Interested? Well, now we’ve got your attention, he’s four reasons why we think you could benefit from this popular workout.

1. It'll challenge your whole body

Now, we’re not against a good leg day. But what if you could challenge your whole body in just one session? That’s where circuit training comes in! Thanks to the versatility of this type of training, you could select exercises to target a number of different areas of the body. For example, a round of plate raises then push ups, followed by a minute plank, a round of rows and a jump squat finisher would be a great mix of strength and cardio exercises and would challenge your whole body.

2. It's so versatile

Are you constantly making excuses to not workout? Maybe you convince yourself you’re just too busy or too tired. Or maybe you’re just bored of the usual drill because, let’s face it, we’re creatures of habit and we all get stuck in a rut. But circuits are so versatile, they can fit into everyone’s lifestyle! Short on time? A quick 20 minutes HIIT circuit should do the trick. Want to try something new? Throw in a few exercises you’ve not tried before and see how you get on. It’s up to you.

Remember, circuit classes are also an option and there’s plenty out there! So, if you’re new to circuits or simply want some inspiration, start by heading down to your local class – it’ll give you some ideas for when you tackle your own solo circuit.

3. It's great for strength and fitness

Yep, we keep harping on about how versatile circuits can be but, trust us on this one, they really are for everyone! If you’re all about building strength and muscle, simply choose exercises that are weight-based to ensure you’re getting your pump on. If you’re set on upping your fitness levels, throw in cardio-based moves such as burpees, jumping jacks and mountain climbers. And, of course, you can mix things up and have a bit of both. Because, who doesn’t want the best of both worlds?

4. It'll add some variety to your workouts

One thing’s certain about circuits – they’re a great way to add some variety to your workouts. Circuits are a great chance to try exercises you wouldn’t usually try. It’s easy to walk into the gym and make a beeline for your fave piece of equipment but a circuit will test your creativity and challenge you to try something new.
