7 tips to combat boredom during lockdown

Bored? Aren’t we all?! Lockdown has stripped us of our freedom and, at times, our sanity! Our once jam-packed social schedules are no more, our future plans uncertain and we are at a loss for things to do. But, this unique scenario may be the first time in most of our lifetimes that it’s been acceptable to slow down and live very much in the moment. However, if you’re used to being busy, this is definitely easier said than done. So, here’s 7 ways to embrace boredom and fill the hours during lockdown whilst you are at home.

1) TAKE SOME TIME TO REFLECT

We’re always so busy. From hectic work schedules, to socialising, keeping fit and staying on top of that dreaded life admin, most of us rarely take the time to reflect on the current situation. What aspects of our life do we like? And, which do we dislike? What would we change? Use this opportunity to take the time to reflect on your life and set some goals. It’s cliché, but where do you see yourself in five years’ time? Taking the time to process these thoughts is essential if you’re set on progressing in your career, taking a next step in your relationship, or starting a new chapter in your life and what better time to do it than when you are bored at home?

Be sure to note down your recent achievements, big or small, and what you’d like to tackle next. Then, think about how you’re going to achieve those goals. Both reflection and looking to the future are great ways to stay positive during the current situation and, once some form of normality has returned, you’ll be feeling more motivated than ever.

2) INDULGE IN SOME GOOD OLD NOSTALGIA

Thinking back to simpler times may feel a little counterproductive, but there’s nothing more comforting than flicking through an old photo album and reminiscing on memories passed. Or, why not create a playlist for a friend, featuring all the songs that remind you of your time together? A trip down memory lane will make you appreciate the experiences you’ve had and the relationships you still have.

3) FIND YOUR INNER CHILD

There are lots of fun things that you can do at home, pick up the felt tips, the PlayStation 2 gathering dust in the loft or engage in a good old game of hide and seek! Now is the perfect time to embrace your inner child. The world is a serious place right now and, of course, there’s no hiding the tragedy that this pandemic has caused, but adopting your childhood hobbies is a great form of escapism, allowing you to get creative and distract yourself from the doom and gloom.

4) TACKLE YOUR TO-DO LIST

What to-do list, you ask? You know the one. It’s the one dotted with the dreary tasks you’ve been putting off for weeks, months, maybe years! From cleaning the fridge and organising your cupboards, to redecorating the spare room and dusting in all those places you can barely reach, this to-do list is more likely to induce boredom than banish it, but you’re guaranteed to feel accomplished once you’ve tackled even one of these tasks.

5) SCHEDULE IN SOME SELF-CARE

Ah, self-care. You can’t breathe nowadays without someone lecturing you on how to practice better self-care. But, it’s not all candles and bubble baths, y’know! How you practice self-care depends on what you consider to be enjoyable. If a face mask and a hot bath’s your thing, then you do you! But, for some, self-care could simply be having an hour a day to themselves to catch up on their favourite TV shows. Or half an hour to head out on a walk and clear their head. For some, self-care means staying on top of their life admin, so, booking in your annual dentist appointment or paying that super important bill on time. Whatever floats your boat, be sure to make the most of the additional free time and do what keeps you sane.

6) STAY CONNECTED

Just cos you can’t see your friends and family, doesn’t mean you can’t see them, if you get what we mean? When apps such as Zoom, House Party FaceTime and Skype exist, there’s really no excuse not to stay in touch with your loved ones. It’s so important to stay connected during a time when it’s easy to feel very alone. If you’re wondering how you’re going to spend yet another weekend indoors, arrange some much-needed catch ups with those you miss. Bars and clubs are a thing of the past – it’s now all about Zoom quiz nights and House Party gatherings!

7) EMBRACE THE BOREDOM

Sounds stupid, but sometimes it can be a real luxury just doing nothing. We’re so used to having plans, whether that’s attending social events or work commitments, but why not embrace this once in a lifetime opportunity to do absolutely nothing?! No rushing to leave the house on time in a bid to miss the morning rush, no debating which outfit to wear to that get together you’d much rather miss and no awkward kitchen chit chat with that colleague you can’t stand. There’s no denying that this situation is a difficult one – maybe the most difficult that many will face, ever. But, focusing on the positives and embracing simplicity is sure to make things that little bit easier.
