5 super simple ways to be healthier
The health and fitness industry has exploded in recent years, with people viewing it as more of a ‘lifestyle’ choice than a daily dread. Do you want to live a healthier life but just don’t know where to start? We’re constantly fed a never-ending tale of what we should be doing to achieve this and some changes are a lot easier than others, but just as beneficial!
1) Get your nutrition on track
The world of nutrition can be daunting place. We are constantly told what is right and wrong and everyone seems to have their own opinion on how you should be living your life and what diet you should be on. The fact is, yeah, you can take advice from your favourite influencers, but no rule applies to everyone - we are all very different! Stay hydrated, eat your 5 a day, have a balanced diet and don’t completely restrict yourself restrict yourself! Food should fuel you but it should be fun too!
2) Stick to a regular sleep routine
Few people manage to actually stick to a bedtime routine. We are fed the knowledge that adults need between 6-9 hours sleep per night, which is technically true, however your routine depends on what works for YOU. The most important thing is working out a routine and sticking to it. Sleep is overlooked when it comes to health and well-being, however this is an essential. Make sure you have a ‘wind down’ routine that suits you, for example, creating a to do list for the next day to clear your mind of any distractions, reading a book or why not download a relaxation app that can help you unwind and drift off? Anything that will relax your mind and body and will help you drift off.
3) Cut back on your screen time
Screen time is at an all-time high, with 51% of us checking our phones multiple times per hour*. As a population, we are pretty dependent on our phones. We can’t seem to get enough of refreshing our Social Media feeds, even if nothing has changed (FOMO comes to mind). Balance is key- we need to separate ourselves from the digital world and concentrate on real life. There are many ways we can spend less time online, by setting ourselves downtime and app limits, or even putting our phone on aeroplane mode at night. The excessive exposure to ‘screens’ really does affect our health in ways we don’t necessarily realise, so it is worth cutting it down.
4) Exercise regularly
New Year, new you and all that… how many of us promised we would make that change? Exercise plays a HUGE part in creating a healthy lifestyle, whether this be a hardcore gym sesh, or just walking down to the shops. Many of us view exercise as a punishing chore, as something we ‘have’ to do, just because it is what you are forced to view as ‘correct’. There are endless amounts of activity that we can do to keep our body healthy, from relaxing Yoga, to HIIT and weightlifting. Exercise doesn’t have to be seen as the enemy. Choose what you like to do and what works for you.
5) Practice a positive mindset
Our physical fitness gets plenty of attention, and for a good reason. Yes, a healthy body can prevent many future health problems, but our mental fitness is equally as important. Our mental health and mindset are often overlooked and this plays a massive part in a ensuring a happy and healthy life. There are countless ways we can exercise a healthy mind, such as taking some time for ourselves and doing what we enjoy to make us happy. Basically, tell yourself that you are going to smash your goals, day, week, whatever - and make it happen! A little self belief can go a long way!
